Grand Park, Summerlin West

Grand Park is the largest park in Summerlin at more than 90 acres, and it is the reason the village around it is called Grand Park. It sits in Summerlin West, Las Vegas 89138, west of the 215 Beltway and north of Far Hills Avenue. Lighted pickleball and basketball courts, a lighted baseball field, open lawn, paved walking paths, water bottle stations and a park barbecue. Open daily until 10:30 p.m.

What is actually there

  • Pickleball. Multiple lighted courts, fenced, with the Spring Mountains directly behind them. Court rules are posted at the gate and are worth reading before you turn up, see below.
  • Basketball. Full outdoor courts, coloured surface, lighted and fenced.
  • Baseball. A lighted field with backstop and bleachers.
  • The great lawn. A wide stretch of open turf with lighting along the paths, which is what makes the park usable after dark in summer.
  • Paved walking paths running the length of the park, lit, and wide enough for a stroller and a dog to pass each other.
  • Water bottle filling stations beside the lawn. In a Las Vegas summer this matters more than it sounds.
  • A park barbecue. The rules sign prohibits fires other than in the park barbecue, so there is one.

The lighting is the thing people underestimate. Courts, field and paths are all lit and the park stays open until 10:30 p.m. From June through September that is the difference between a park you use and a park you look at, because nobody is playing pickleball here at two in the afternoon in July.

Grand Park rules and regulations

Posted at the park entrance by the Summerlin Council. Transcribed here in full, because it is not published anywhere online.

  1. Park is open daily until 10:30 p.m.
  2. No alcoholic beverages or glass containers are allowed in the park.
  3. No dogs are allowed in the park unless they are restrained by a leash. Pet owners are required to pick up after their pets.
  4. No dogs are allowed in activity or sports areas. All other animals prohibited.
  5. No vehicles are allowed in the park except in posted parking areas or roadway. All vehicles entering and operating in the park shall strictly obey traffic laws and posted signs.
  6. Absolutely no parking in red zones and along curbed entryways.
  7. No camping or lodging is allowed in the park.
  8. No fires are allowed other than in the park barbecue.
  9. No fireworks, firearms or weapons of any type are allowed in the park.
  10. No golfing is allowed in the park.
  11. Sales of any kind are prohibited unless prior authorization is granted by the Summerlin Council.

Pickleball court rules

Posted on the court fence by the Summerlin Council.

  1. Court time is limited to one hour per group.
  2. Courts are for pickleball play only. No scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, bike riding or other similar activities permitted.
  3. No food or glass allowed.
  4. Pets are prohibited in the courts.
  5. Proper court etiquette should be observed at all times. Wait for play to stop before passing through a court in use. No congregating between courts.
  6. Abusive language or unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.
  7. Summerlin residents have priority during peak hours. Be prepared to show your resident ID card to gain access.
  8. Tournaments, leagues and professional instruction are not permitted.
  9. All park rules and guidelines apply.

The sign also notes that courts may be slippery when wet or dirty.

Rule seven is the one worth buying a house over, almost. Summerlin residents have priority on the pickleball courts during peak hours, and you may be asked to show a Summerlin resident ID card. That is a real, enforceable benefit of living inside the master plan rather than next to it, and it is the kind of thing that never appears in a listing.

Terrace Park is a different park

Grand Park village has two. Grand Park is the 90 acre one described here. Terrace Park is the smaller one, with four lighted pickleball courts, bocce, cornhole and a playground, and it sits beside Edgewood at the other end of the village. If someone tells you a neighborhood is walking distance to the park, ask which one.

Which neighborhoods are closest

Arcadia backs directly onto the park. The homes on Natural Harmony Street overlook it, and that is the view in the photograph below. Edgewood sits just west of Terrace Park. Every one of the 13 Grand Park neighborhoods is within the village, but proximity varies a great deal and it is worth walking before you choose a lot.
