If it feels like everyone you know is moving to Las Vegas, you are not imagining it. Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing major metros in the country, and roughly one in four new residents now arrives from California. So why are so many people moving to Las Vegas? The short answer is taxes, affordability, and a job market that has grown well beyond the Strip.

Where are people moving to Las Vegas from?

California is by far the top origin state. Industry moving data points to roughly 50,000 people per year relocating to Las Vegas from California alone, most of them coming from the Los Angeles area. Other common origins include Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and the Northeast. The common thread is people leaving higher-cost, higher-tax states for a place where their income and savings go further.

No state income tax

Nevada is one of the few states with no state income tax, and that is the single biggest draw for many movers. A household earning $100,000 keeps thousands of dollars more each year here than it would in California. There is also no tax on Social Security or other retirement income, which is why Las Vegas is popular with retirees as well as working families and remote professionals.

Homes you can actually afford

Housing is the other major factor. As of early 2026, the median single-family home in the Las Vegas Valley costs about $480,000, with townhomes and condos often in the $300,000s. Compared with Los Angeles, San Diego, or the Bay Area, that price difference can mean owning a home with a yard instead of renting an apartment indefinitely. For a California family selling a smaller home, the move often comes with money left over.

What companies are moving to Las Vegas?

People follow jobs, and jobs are following the same logic. More than 5,600 companies have relocated to Nevada over the past three decades, many of them from California, drawn by the tax climate and lower operating costs. Recent growth in technology, cloud and data-center infrastructure, logistics, and clean energy has broadened the local economy well past tourism and gaming. A more diverse job market means more reasons for households to put down roots.

Sunshine and lifestyle

Beyond the numbers, Las Vegas offers more than 300 days of sunshine a year, quick access to Red Rock Canyon and Lake Mead, world-class dining and entertainment, and no shortage of master-planned communities with parks, trails, and top-rated schools. For many movers, the lifestyle upgrade is just as compelling as the financial one.
